Something happened last year that most marketing teams still have not processed.

Buyers stopped googling and started asking.

Not asking their friends. Not asking on forums. Asking AI. The old game vs the new one

For twenty years the playbook was clear. Create content, optimize it for Google, earn backlinks, rank higher, get clicks. The entire internet economy ran on that loop.

The loop is breaking.

A Pew Research Center study tracked nearly 70,000 search sessions. When Google's AI Overview appeared, only 8% of users clicked through to a website. Without the AI summary, 15% clicked. Almost double. Users ended their entire browsing session 26% of the time when an AI summary showed up, compared to 16% when it did not.

Content creators are producing the raw material that AI uses to generate answers. But the reader never arrives at their site. The information travels from the source to the AI to the user, and the source gets nothing.

That is the landscape now. Building your strategy around it is not optional.


How AI actually chooses what to recommend

This is the part most people skip. Understanding the mechanism changes how you respond.

When you ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, the system does not just pull the answer from memory. Modern AI search tools use a process called Retrieval-Augmented Generation. The model searches a massive index of web content first, finds relevant sources, then writes a response grounded in what it retrieved.

The retrieval step is where your brand either gets in or gets left out.

Two kinds of search happen at once. Semantic search converts your question into a mathematical representation and finds content with similar meaning, even when the exact words are different. Ask about "affordable email marketing platforms" and it can surface content about "budget-friendly marketing automation" because the meaning overlaps.

Keyword matching also runs simultaneously. When the query uses a specific brand name or technical phrase, the system looks for exact text matches too.

The AI takes the retrieved content, synthesizes it, and presents an answer with citations. Perplexity has described this as the "strict grounding principle." The model is instructed never to state anything unsupported by retrieved sources.

But here is the critical detail. The AI needs sources. It does not need yours specifically. Any credible source covering the same topic will do.

So the real question becomes: why would the AI choose you?


What makes AI pick your content over someone else's

Researchers at Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI, and Princeton tested nine different content strategies for increasing AI citation rates. Three strategies consistently outperformed across every domain they tested.

Citing credible sources in your own content. When your writing references authoritative research, the AI system treats your content as more authoritative in return. This mirrors how Google's PageRank worked conceptually. The AI learned what reliable content looks like by studying citation patterns in its training data. Content that cites well tends to be cited back.

Including named experts with verifiable credentials. Anonymous opinions get filtered during retrieval. A direct quote from a named researcher at a known institution carries weight. The AI can verify the person exists and verify their affiliation. That verification signal matters when ranking retrieved content.

Using real data. Specific numbers, percentages, and quantitative evidence increase retrieval likelihood. Not because the AI loves numbers. Because content with data tends to come from primary sources. And primary sources are what the retrieval system is looking for.

These three signals are not about gaming anything. They are about producing the kind of content that serious researchers produce. The AI was trained on the internet's entire knowledge base. It learned to distinguish between surface-level summaries and original work.

The technical gatekeeper most brands miss

There is a barrier that has nothing to do with content quality. And it blocks more brands than you would expect.

Most AI crawlers, including PerplexityBot, fetch the raw HTML of a page without running JavaScript. This matters because a huge number of modern websites load content dynamically. The page starts as an empty shell, JavaScript runs in the browser, and then the content appears. Fine for human visitors. A wall for AI crawlers.

If your content loads through client-side JavaScript, the crawler sees a blank page. Your article, your data, your expert quotes. All invisible. The AI cannot recommend what it cannot read.

Server-side rendering is now a baseline requirement for AI discoverability. Not a nice-to-have. A hard requirement.

Check this before you optimize anything else. Open your page source (not the developer inspector, the actual view-source) and look for your content in the HTML. If you see it, good. If you see empty divs and JavaScript bundle references where your content should be, you have a problem that no amount of content optimization will fix.


The overlap between Google and AI visibility

One of the most useful findings from recent research: 38% of AI citations come from pages that already rank in Google's top ten.

That means traditional SEO and AI visibility are not separate problems. They overlap. A page that ranks well on Google is more likely to appear in the AI's retrieval index. And a page that gets cited by AI builds signals that can help it rank on Google.

The practical takeaway is that you do not need to abandon your SEO work to optimize for AI. You need to layer AI-specific strategies on top of it. The foundation stays the same: original, well-sourced, well-structured content on a fast, accessible website. The new layer is making sure that content is retrievable by AI systems and structured in a way that makes it easy to cite.


Becoming the source AI has to cite

This is where the conversation gets real.

If your content can be restated by anyone, it will be restated by AI. And when that happens, your ideas exist in the model's response but your brand does not. You contributed the thinking but someone else gets the credit. Or worse, nobody gets the credit because the AI just absorbed it.

In traditional search, dropping from position one to position three still gets you traffic. You lose some, a competitor gains some, the market distributes.

Five things you can do this week

You do not need a six-month roadmap to start.

Check your rendering. Open your key pages in view-source mode and confirm the content is in the raw HTML. If it is not, talk to your engineering team about server-side rendering. This is the single highest-impact technical fix for AI visibility.
